”As I strode along the battlements, I heard a cry in the distant. I tried to believe that it had only been an owl or similar, but in the back of my mind I knew it was not so. We had been at war with the undead for weeks now, and that was surely the sound of a carrion. These foul hellriders had been harassing the castle ever since the war begun, and it was time for another one of their visits. But tonight there was something more ominous following in their wake. As I called on the guard, I saw a figure flying slowly behind them. It had the shape of a man, not bird, and I heard it chant in a tongue that sent chill down my back. When I fired my handgun at it, the bullet went straight through, and it didn’t even bother about it. I turned my head to yell a command for the guncrew, and when I looked back, the thing was gone.”

”I didn’t see the creature any more that night, but two nights later when we were assaulted by legions of undead, I saw it fly among the walking dead, and it seemed like it issued commands to all the others. Even now, twenty years later I remember that long cloaked figure, and the big scythe it carried. Although it was destroyed by my lords Runefang, I am sure that it did not rest for long. I have seen the scythe in my dreams, and the wound I have from it has never really healed. At night I lay awake, hearing the words ‘Carrion Lord’ whispered in my ears by a spirit that I know is evil...”

Mortarion may be included in any Undead army as an independent character, or as its general.

 

Weapons / Armour: The Reaper Scythe, Handweapon.

May Ride: Mortarion may not ride anything.

Magic Items:Mortarion is a Liche and is allowed up to four magic items one of which will always be the The Reaper Scythe which has its points cost included above.

Special Rules:

Fly : Mortarion has big leathery wings and can fly up to 18” as per the Warhammer rules. Note that he CANNOT fly high.

Fear : As a Liche, Mortarion causes fear in others. He is immune to all Psychology himself

Ethereal : Mortarion is a Wraith with his magic powers intact, and is therefore partially ethereal. All attacks in h-t-h or shooting suffers a -2 to hit penalty. Warmachines and the like which don’t use BS to hit only affects him on 6+. But if he fails a breaktest, he will suffer an additional wound.

The Reaper Scythe : This weapon looks like a rusty old scythe, but it is a magic artefact of great strength. It gives the wielder the strength bonus of a 2-handed weapon, but allows him to strike with only a -1 to his I, and to strike first when charging in the normal manner. It also contain a spell that allows the wielder to use wounds caused by the scythe to mend wounds suffered earlier in the battle. The last bonus does only apply if the wielder is a magician.
